West Mac Family Retreat is a reflection of its uniquely shaped lot, the bordering lakes and the client’s desire to have a tailored fit project into its unique setting. Wedged between two lakes on an isthmus, the building’s plan and roof showcase the ‘sawtooth’ nature of its available footprint. As a part of this, the property required the design team to dance between lot restrictions and house design/programming to allow for a feasible and buildable lot. Working hand in hand with Ottertail County Land and Resources, West Mac Family Retreat became a reality after a year-long permitting process that made this project a reality. The design team’s meticulous site planning and case studies are what convinced the county to allow the project to be built, resulting in a happy client and showcasing the value of an architect. Beyond that, this project really does excel at providing a very fitting project for its site, program and the client’s desire for a lake retreat, allowing full enjoyment of the property with family and friends.
