Hub 41 has proven to be a playful departure from the traditional “lake cottage” forms of Detroit Lakes. Bold in form, color and approach, the project has become a welcome destination for lake goers looking for a break from the water while still allowing the user to appreciate the “open air” concept, evocative of seaside projects from warmer climates. The design team stacked the building area to offer better views of the water, varied zones of seating, and more room for outdoor space as a means of maximizing the tight site. Book-ended by a newly constructed hotel, an existing wetland and an existing parking lot, the project carefully disguises the kitchen equipment and provides an iconic shape recognizable from anywhere on the water…..a welcome design feature that drives business and celebrates its beachside setting, begging the user to bring their flip-flops and abandon any air of formality at the door.
