Crooked Cabin
CROOKED CABIN \ 2022 AIA ND Merit Award
Crooked Cabin is all about sharing a special 'perch' in the trees with friends and family in the most meaningful and inspiring way. Centered on a 'carved out' porch, this project embraces its site by understanding its relationship to the little 'pocket' in the trees. The cabin respects the wooded site with its black 'bark-like' exterior, engages the lake with a spa-like sauna/yoga experience, manages the wind with operable windows and passive planning, and provides shade dependent upon the time of day and weather. Balancing these concepts with the needs of the client, the cabin remains sensitive to the zoning of public and private space, allowing for different schedules of the owner and guests. The success of this project is in its ability to manage a large program (large volumes of family/visitors) with the most efficient and cost-effective floor plan that provides a beautiful and restful space for multiple users. Steeped in Scandinavian traditions, meditation and finding 'beauty in the simple', the Crooked Cabin is an amazing place to recharge with the people you love. Reminiscent of fallen trees with a little notch cut out, Crooked Cabin is a delicate and thoughtful approach to a time-honored Minnesota tradition of gathering at the lake in a breeze swept porch, sharing a meal with friends and family, partaking in the occasional 'polar plunge' and allowing time to recharge.
