Palmer's House
PALMER'S HOUSE \ 2020 AIA ND Merit Award
Palmer was born with Spina Bifida. Palmer was also born with parents and brothers that do everything they can to make sure he gets to do what he wants to do. Prior to this project, the family was living in a multi-level, sunken living room, 1970’s kind of house and it became very evident that Palmer was getting left out and his family was working really hard to keep up with four boys. If the cousins went downstairs, Palmer was left upstairs. If the kids went outside, Palmer needed help from mom or dad to get ready to go outside. Unfortunately, by the time Palmer was ready to go outside, the kids were already coming inside. Following the families lead, the design team has taken great pride in making sure this house is awesome for all of its inhabitants. At the end of the day, the design is inspiring, it functions for the entire family and Palmer gets to be a part of the action, no matter what. As an architect, it is a treat to see a direct connection between design and the user, seeing firsthand that design matters. In this case, it is the greatest sight when Palmer gets to slap hockey pucks, visit his dog in the garage, ride the 4-wheeler and even listen to his mom to wash up before dinner…or, better yet, help make dinner. Palmer’s House is “zero barriers,” by design…and mom and dad have their space too.
